Download Recent Advances in Physical Modeling with K- and W-Techniques Physical (or physics-based) modeling of musical instruments is one of the main research fields in computer music. A basic question, with increasing research interest recently, is to understand how different discrete-time modeling paradigms are interrelated and can be combined, whereby wave modeling with wave quantities (W-methods) and Kirchhoff quantities (K-methods) can be understood in the same theoretical framework. This paper presents recent results from the HUT Sound Source Modeling group, both in the form of theoretical discussions and by examples of Kvs. W-modeling in sound synthesis of musical instruments.
Download A pickup model for the Clavinet In this paper recent findings on magnetic transducers are applied to the analysis and modeling of Clavinet pickups. The Clavinet is a stringed instrument having similarities to the electric guitar, it has magnetic single coil pickups used to transduce the string vibration to an electrical quantity. Data gathered during physical inspection and electrical measurements are used to build a complete model which accounts for nonlinearities in the magnetic flux. The model is inserted in a Digital Waveguide (DWG) model for the Clavinet string for its evaluation.
Download Virtual Analog Modeling of Distortion Circuits Using Neural Ordinary Differential Equations Recent research in deep learning has shown that neural networks can learn differential equations governing dynamical systems. In this paper, we adapt this concept to Virtual Analog (VA) modeling to learn the ordinary differential equations (ODEs) governing the first-order and the second-order diode clipper. The proposed models achieve performance comparable to state-of-the-art recurrent neural networks (RNNs) albeit using fewer parameters. We show that this approach does not require oversampling and allows to increase the sampling rate after the training has completed, which results in increased accuracy. Using a sophisticated numerical solver allows to increase the accuracy at the cost of slower processing. ODEs learned this way do not require closed forms but are still physically interpretable.
Download Hyper-Dimensional Digital Waveguide Mesh for Reverberation Modeling Characteristics of digital waveguide meshes with more than three physical dimensions are studied. Especially, the properties of a 4-D mesh are analyzed and compared to waveguide structures of lower dimensionalities. The hypermesh produces a response with a dense and irregular modal pattern at high frequencies, which is beneficial in modeling the reverberation of rooms or musical instrument bodies. In addition, it offers a high degree of decorrelation between output points selected at different locations, which is advantageous for multi-channel reverberation. The frequencydependent decay of the hypermesh response can be controlled using boundary filters introduced recently by one of the authors. Several hypermeshes can be effectively combined in a multirate system, in which each mesh produces reverberation on a finite frequency band. The paper presents two hypermesh application examples: the modeling of the impulse response of a lecture hall and the simulation of the response of a clavichord soundbox.
Download The Helmholtz Resonator Tree The Helmholtz resonator is a prototype of a single acoustic resonance, which can be modeled with a digital resonator. This paper extends this concept by coupling several Helmholtz resonators. The resulting structure is called a Helmholtz resonator tree. The height of the tree is defined by the number of resonator layers that are interconnected. The overall number of resonance frequencies of a Helmholtz resonator tree is the same as its height. A Helmholtz resonator tree can be modeled using wave digital filters (WDF), when electro-acoustic analogies are applied. A WDF tool for implementing Helmholtz resonator trees has been developed in C++. A VST plugin and an Android mobile application were created, which can run short Helmholtz resonator trees in real time. Helmholtz resonator trees can be used for the real-time synthesis of percussive sounds and for realizing novel filtering which can be tuned using intuitive physical parameters.
Download Neural Modeling of Magnetic Tape Recorders The sound of magnetic recording media, such as open-reel and cassette tape recorders, is still sought after by today’s sound practitioners due to the imperfections embedded in the physics of the magnetic recording process. This paper proposes a method for digitally emulating this character using neural networks. The signal chain of the proposed system consists of three main components: the hysteretic nonlinearity and filtering jointly produced by the magnetic recording process as well as the record and playback amplifiers, the fluctuating delay originating from the tape transport, and the combined additive noise component from various electromagnetic origins. In our approach, the hysteretic nonlinear block is modeled using a recurrent neural network, while the delay trajectories and the noise component are generated using separate diffusion models, which employ U-net deep convolutional neural networks. According to the conducted objective evaluation, the proposed architecture faithfully captures the character of the magnetic tape recorder. The results of this study can be used to construct virtual replicas of vintage sound recording devices with applications in music production and audio antiquing tasks.
Download Alias-free Virtual Analog Oscillators Using a Feedback Delay Loop The rich spectra of classic waveforms (sawtooth, square and triangular) are obtained by discontinuities in the waveforms or their derivatives. At the same time, the discontinuities lead to aliasing when the waveforms are digitally generated. To remove or reduce the aliasing, researchers have proposed various methods, mostly based on limiting bandwidth or smoothing the waveforms. This paper introduces a new approach to generate the virtual analog oscillators with no aliasing. The approach relies on generating an impulse train using a feedback delay loop, often used for the physical modeling of musical instruments. Classic waveforms are then derived from the impulse train with a leaky integrator. Although the output generated by this method is not exactly periodic, it perceptually sounds harmonic. While additional processing is required for time-varying pitch shifting, resulting in some high-frequency attenuation when the pitch changes, the proposed method is computationally more efficient than other algorithms and the high-frequency attenuation can be also adjusted.
Download Automatic calibration and equalization of a line array system This paper presents an automated Public Address processing unit, using delay and magnitude response adjustment. The aim is to achieve a flat frequency response and delay adjustment between different physically-placed speakers at the measuring point, which is nowadays usually made manually by the sound technician. The adjustment is obtained using three signal processing operations to the audio signal: time delay adjustment, crossover filtering, and graphic equalization. The automation is in the calculation of different parameter sets: estimation of the time delay, the selection of a suitable crossover frequency, and calculation of the gains for a third-octave graphic equalizer. These automatic methods reduce time and effort in the calibration of line-array PA systems, since only three sine sweeps must be played through the sound system. Measurements have been conducted in an anechoic chamber using a 1:10 scale model of a line array system to verify the functioning of the automatic calibration and equalization methods.
Download Physically Informed Synthesis of Jackhammer Tool Impact Sounds This paper introduces a sound synthesis method for jackhammer tool impact sounds. The model is based on parallel waveguide models for longitudinal and transversal vibrations. The longitudinal sounds are produced using a comb filter that is tuned to match the longitudinal resonances of a steel bar. The dispersive transversal vibrations are produced using a comb filter which has a cascade of first-order allpass filters and time-varying feedback coefficient. The synthesis model is driven by an input generator unit that produces a train of Hann pulses at predetermined time-intervals. Each pulse has its amplitude modified slightly by a random process. For increased realism each impact is followed by a number of repetitive impacts with variable amplitude and time difference according to the initial pulse. The sound output of the model is realized by mixing both transversal and longitudinal signals and the effect is finalized by an equalizer.
Download Implementing a Low Latency Parallel Graphic Equalizer with Heterogeneous Computing This paper describes the implementation of a recently introduced parallel graphic equalizer (PGE) in a heterogeneous way. The control and audio signal processing parts of the PGE are distributed to a PC and to a signal processor, of WaveCore architecture, respectively. This arrangement is particularly suited to the algorithm in question, benefiting from the low-latency characteristics of the audio signal processor as well as general purpose computing power for the more demanding filter coefficient computation. The design is achieved cleanly in a high-level language called Kronos, which we have adapted for the purposes of heterogeneous code generation from a uniform program source.
