Chapter 1

Introduction

Matlab for Chapter 1

U. Zölzer

In this introductory chapter we explain some simple basics of digital signal processing and then show how to write simulation software for audio effects processing with the MATLAB simulation tool. MATLAB implementations of digital audio effects are a long way from running in real-time on a personal computer or allowing real-time control of its parameters. But, nevertheless the programming of signal processing algorithms and in particular sound effect algorithms with MATLAB is very easy and can be learned in a very short period. We will introduce the handling of digital signals with MATLAB, demonstrate spectrum analysis of digital signals and give a short introduction to digital systems, which are represented by software algorithms to modify a digital audio signal.
